Accessibility Links
Introduction
"Disability culture. Say what? Aren't disabled people just isolated victims of nature or circumstance? Yes and no. True, we are far too often isolated. . . . But there is a growing consciousness among us: that is not acceptable. Because there is always an underground. Notes get passed among survivors. And the notes we're passing these days say: there's power in difference. Power. Pass the word." --Cheryl Marie Wade
Welcome to Accessibility Links, which were chosen first of all for their origin, with strong preference given when possible to sites of individuals and organizations who identify with the disability rights movement over those of charitable initiatives run primarily by non-disabled individuals.
Sites were also of course chosen for content, with those containing intriguing artistic works or useful information given priority over mere marketing tools. Since this list is not intended to be comprehensive, sites with a variety of active links were also given preference. Finally,
consideration was given to how well the sites met basic guidelines for accessibility by blind Internet users or users with other types of disabilities.
Accessibility Links were compiled and annotated by Jane Berliss-Vincent, who has worked in the field of adaptive technology for 13 years, and is currently at the Center for Accessible Technology. She developed one of the first widely disseminated sets of Internet access guidelines. Berliss-Vincent also serves on the board of the Corporation on Disabilities and Telecommunication (CDT) and is involved with ArTech, a new initiative on art, technology, and accessibility.
